How can you learn self defence from home?

We enjoy greater convenience at home than any other time in history. Whether it’s ordering gourmet food directly to your door or having a hairdresser or masseuse carry out their service within your home, we’re very lucky to live in a time where these possibilities are available to us. And, just as these services are made available at your convenience, many are surprised to discover that learning vital skills such as self defence can also be from home.

These days there are a variety of different ways available to learn self defence at home. You might be able to learn by following guided videos online, having an online video call with a certified trainer, or having said trainer come over to your house in person. All of which are helpful ways to learn self defence without having to leave the comfort of your own home.

Ways of learning self defence online

  1. Online Social Media Videos

There are millions of different videos instructing viewers on how to perform certain methods of self defence. Although not all those videos come from reliable sources. Some may be unclear explanations, some may be inaccurate or unrealistic ones, some may not be coming from a qualified person.

So, you need to be able to find ones that clearly explain each step whilst also having trained people demonstrate each movement, to gain a more clear and accurate understanding of what you are trying to learn. This will help you avoid injury and learn these important skills correctly.

Self Defence Hub does exactly that, just search the name on Instagram and it will come up with the page. They have started to create a series of videos that thoroughly explain techniques that allow anyone of any shape, size, or skill level to execute.

One video from Self Defence Hub’s Instagram explains what to do if somebody has pinned you onto the floor. It shows a brief explanation, with a follow up video demonstrating it slower and in more depth so that you get a better understanding of the movements to perform. There are other similar videos explaining how to properly get out of bad situations, the kind none of us hope we will be faced with.

    Here is an example

  2. Online Training Videos

Another way of learning self defence is by watching online training videos with a friend or partner to learn at your own pace. It also allows for you to practice with someone to see if the techniques are right and how to clean up and perfect the manoeuvre. You'll be able to train in a structured program and grow your skills rather than having random skills for different situations.

  3. Online session with the instructor

If you want to level up, add an online session with the instructor so you can go through the lesson together. This way is similar to the guided video tutorials but it allows you and the trainer to work in real time. It also allows you to ask questions when you feel you need clarification. This option is also the most safe option in terms of hygiene when it comes to person to person contact. It is also one of the best methods to do if you have to quarantine but want to continue learning self defence.

  4. Personal instructor comes to your home

The best option is to have a personal instructor come to your home so you can learn face to face and at your own pace. Training face-to-face with a qualified trainer means that they can properly demonstrate methods of self defence and take you through everything at your own speed. It also allows for the trainer to monitor your actions from a range of angles and make sure you are executing each movement to the best of your abilities.

This is another thing that Self Defence Hub can do to help empower you and teach you self defence. You can organise for your session with a personal instructor to teach you all you would like to know or expand your knowledge on the necessities of self defence.

All of our trainers are fully qualified and ready to help you develop your skills and reach your goals, whatever they may be. They can begin by teaching you the basics and then if there are particular things you would like to know to increase your safety, fitness, or technique, they can assist you.
